CoSTAR Live Lab Presents: Professor Florian Block's AI research with Dock 10 and 2LE Media

Research led by the University of York explores using AI powered lighting to place people in live virtual productions using real-time, accessible technology

CoSTAR Live Lab has launched a series of talks to inspire future innovators with a webinar exploring the use of AI in Cross-Reality (XR) audience experiences, "AI Powered Lighting for Live Virtual Production" (ALL.VP).
CoSTAR Live Lab launched its state-of-the-art facility in February 2025 and this series demonstrates the kind of experimentation and research they offer through CoSTAR Network's Access Programmes.
In their first talk The University of York's Professor Florian Block shares findings from the ALL.VP project carried out in collaboration with Dock 10, the UK's largest TV facility and 2LE Media, an exciting company at the forefront of experimentation with new production facilities.
The project explores how real people can be seamlessly placed into creative, virtual environments using cost-effective technologies in real-time with a near perfect illusion of people actually being there.
Focusing on three virtual production techniques incorporating green screen, deep fakes and 3D gaussian splat modelling, Professor Block discusses the impact of these technologies on accessibility and copyright ethics.
CoSTAR Live Lab Presents is a series of inspiring public webinars hosted within the CoSTAR Live Lab and live-streamed online. The series will feature talks about projects that have been conducted in partnership with the CoSTAR Live Lab, as well as others by leading speakers working on related projects.
It aims to host a mix of talks covering topics including, underpinning technical innovations, examples of innovative creative work and discussions of important issues impacting the sector like equality, diversity and inclusion.
